Sports and activities can be an amazing extension of the classroom to learn how to be cooperative, courageous, self-giving, compassionate, hardworking and competitive. Coaches and advisors need to be intentional in their activities’ programs to accomplish this. It is not enough to say our students will just learn this without guidance and purpose-driven coaching.
An education-based coaching philosophy, “Why We Play,” has been promoted by the Minnesota State High School League and is gaining popularity throughout the U.S. and is part of Le Sueur-Henderson coaches’ professional development efforts. It’s an effort to teach respect, responsibility and preparation for life beyond sports.
